The ABRSM Brass Syllabus for 2023 was recently released by ABRSM. With a full range of new books available, covering all Brass instruments in the exam portfolio, including: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium and more.
In the new books you can expect to find:
- An updated repertoire list, with scales and sight-reading requirements available for all instruments and Practical Grades.
- A broader choice of repertoire than ever before, with most instruments now having lists extended to ten pieces.
- Some popular pieces from the previous syllabus have been retained.
- For the first time there is a Duet Option included (up to Grade 3)
- Repertoire lists are now defined by musical characteristics
- Playing unaccompanied is no longer a requirement, however it remains optional.
- Practical Grade Scales have a more realistic assessment load, with the focus on technical development and progression
- Practical Grade Sight-reading now has revised parameters and new tests written in a range of familiar styles
- Horn and Trumpet get a new style of test at Grades 6 to 8 which combine sight-reading and transposing-at-sight into one single test

Key Dates for the new ABRSM Brass Syllabus 2023
The new ABRSM Brass Syllabus 2023 will come into effect on the 1st January 2023.
There will be a syllabus overlap period of one year, lasting until 31st December 2023. During this time, candidates can present requirements from the previous syllabus. Note that all exam requirements must be prepared from the same syllabus, you cannot choose from both together.
When taking the exam, candidates need to inform the examiner which syllabus they have prepared.
