Discovering Music Theory by ABRSM is a new range of workbooks tailored around the new ABRSM Online Music Theory Exams (Grades 1-5).
The Discovering Music Theory series is made up of two sets of books, the Discovering Music Theory Workbook (Grades 1-5) and the Discovering Music Theory Answer Book (Grades 1-5).
Each Workbook covers a single grade with a variety of exercises to build skills and understanding, questions to challenge the student, helpful tips and more.
The Workbooks
The Workbook is the book most people will want to buy. This book contains all the preparatory activities to practice for your (or your child’s) forthcoming music theory exam.
If you are learning alone, or if you are a parent assisting your child, you may want to purchase the accompanying Answer Book. The Answer Book is an ideal way to check the exercises from the Workbook have been completed correctly.
If you are working with a music teacher, the teacher will usually go through the Workbook with you. As you complete each section, the teacher can review it, in line with your lesson progress.
In our experience, we’ve found the Discovering Music Theory Workbook to be a useful learning tool for children to work through in-between their normal music lessons. Armed with the Answer Book, most parents will be able to help their child through the exercises. Where possible, the guidance of a teacher is always recommended.
As part of you or your child’s preparation for a music theory exam, we recommend purchasing some Practice Papers. This will enable you/your child to sit mock exams at home to get a feel for the structure of the exam and the exam questions.

The Answer Books
As mentioned above, the Answer Books are typically used by students who are learning music theory without the aid of a music teacher. They will allow you, or the parent of a child student, to review the work completed in the Workbooks and see where mistakes have been made.
We always recommend following the direct advice of your music teacher. In most cases, the music teacher will review your answers with you, helping you fill in the gaps in your knowledge and setting additional practice tasks where necessary.

ABRSM Online Music Theory Sample Papers
Although not part of the Discovering Music Theory Series, the ABRSM Music Theory Sample Papers are an important part of practicing and preparing for an ABRSM Music Theory exam.
These official Sample Papers allow you to practice sitting your ABRSM Remote Music Theory Exams, with questions simulating those that you’ll find in the actual exam.
Students will typically sit several mock exams in the run up to the real exam. This will help prepare for the exam structure, the types of questions and the experience of sitting an exam under the appropriate conditions. This kind of practice is especially helpful for children sitting their first exam.
Your (or your child’s) music teacher will usually mark the papers for you and review them with you. Additional practice tasks can then be set to cover any gaps in knowledge or to correct common mistakes.
A note about Model Answers: Although there are Model Answer books available, we have seen reports of incorrect answers being printed in the official accompanying Model Answers papers. For this reason we’ve chosen not to link to them and would instead recommend you liaise with your teacher on the marking of your Sample Papers. We expect ABRSM to correct any errors in future print runs.

Discovering Music Theory is a useful series of workbooks that we feel is best utilised by younger students. This doesn’t mean they don’t have a use for adult learners as well.
